Identification test for protein.

Dr. Brown: Well-done on completing your first task. We will update the patient’s file so that the results can be discussed with her doctor.

(Handing you another test tube). This is a urine sample that we need to test for the presence of protein.

You: Why are we testing for protein, Dr. Brown?

Dr. Brown: This is a patient who is 25 weeks pregnant. As part of routine monitoring, at this stage in pregnancy, urine is tested for the presence of protein. The presence of protein could indicate a predisposition to serious complications in pregnancy, including for example high blood pressure or even seizures.

Monica: That sounds quite serious, Dr. Brown.

Dr. Brown: Yes, it can be and this is why monitoring is required; early intervention in case of a positive test is important. So, let’s talk about the test you need to carry out.

What is the most appropriate test for protein?

  • Benedict test
  • Biuret Test
