Glipizide

Dr. McPhee: This is not quite right for Mr. Green. Glipizide is a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin secretion from the pancreas and thus can be used in type 2 diabetes in cases where first line drugs are not indicated or unavailable. However, it increases the risk of hypoglycaemia and tends to cause weight gain, which are not ideal for a patient who is overweight and has a history of hypertension. Sulfonylureas do not provide the same cardiovascular protection as other drugs, which is a major goal of diabetes management. Think carefully about the broader health context for Mr. Green and try again!
