Stay in therapy (continue with CBT sessions)Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an intervention that aims to reduce symptoms of various conditions in a relatively short period of time (average duration of therapy 8 to 12 sessions), focuses on challenging and changing cognitive distortions (such as thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes) and their associated behaviors to improve emotional regulation and develop personal coping strategies that target solving current problems. One key component of CBT is "homework" that helps facilitate therapy outcomes. Clients need to use what they learn in therapy during their daily lives. So, assigning therapy “homework” can help clients practice new skills during the week. Anna's psychologist recommends reading some relevant books and watching videos on hip OA as part of her "homework". This way, she can understand how OA impacts daily lives of patients, but at the same time be inspired by success stories of people that manage their pain, get acquainted with best practices in terms of pain self-management. Anna discusses her "homework" with her husband and her friend. Her husband sounds excited and encourages her to keep up with her tasks and do her "homework". But her friend says that she can ignore her homework and could even stop therapy in general. Instead, she can go online, on some facebook groups with people discussing their OA experiences. There she can find enough support and guidance. |
