If there is no indication for Glu intolerance in the 1st trimester, check again in the 2nd trimester

If the laboratory test in 1st trimester appears normal, a second test in the 2nd trimester is recommended. Specifically:

R2.2 Perform 2-h 75-g OGTT in 24 – 28w (1+++)

The 75-g OGTT should be performed after an overnight fast of at least 8 hours (but not more that 14 hours) and without having reduced usual carbohydrate intake for the preceding several days. The test should be performed with the patient seated and not smoking.

The samples taken are: 0-h value (Fasting plasma Glu), 1-h value and 2-h value. 

The test results are characterized normal if:

  • Fasting plasma Glu <92mg/dL
  • 1-h value <180mg/dL and
  • 2-h value <153mg/dL
