Screening and diagnosing glucose intolerance in pregnancy

This algorithm describes the diagnostic pathway to investigate glucose (Glu) intolerance during pregnancy, according to Endocrine Society (ES) guidelines, published in 2013.

Diagnosis is based on data recorded in medical history and laboratory tests performed in the appropriate gestational age. The aim is to distinguish, as soon as possible, pregnants with any of the following types of glucose intolerance:

  • overt diabetes mellitus (DM)
    • either known (case of DM diagnosed in preconception period) or
    • unknown (DM existing in preconception period, yet undiagnosed till that time) and
  • gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)

and minimize the risk for adverse outcomes, with appropriate management in each case.
