Lysis in distilled water, normal shape in 0.9% NaCl and plasmolyse in 6% NaCl

Prof Smith: Lysis will happen to the red blood cell in distilled water and in 0.9% the red blood cell will keep its normal cell shape. However, in 6% NaCl solution the red blood cell will not plasmolyse. Why is that do you think?

You: Only plant cells can plasmolyse in hypertonic solution like NaCl! This is because they have a cell wall and the plasma membrane can detach from it as the water molecules are moving out of the cell. The red blood cells do not have a cell wall. There shape will be destroyed, they will shrivel and look like a raising like we say in the Slide 6!

Which option will you choose now?

  • Lysis in distilled water, normal shape in 0.9% NaCl and shrivel in 6% NaCl
  • Lysis in distilled water, normal shape in 0.9% NaCl and swelling in 6% NaCl
