High-glucose media for fast-growing cells (DMEM)

Michael: ‘What if we choose a high-glucose medium to fuel HeLa’s rapid growth? It sounds like it matches their energy needs.’

Dr. Lee: ‘You’re absolutely correct! A high-glucose medium, like Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) with 4.5 g/L glucose, is ideal for HeLa cells. This concentration provides ample energy for their rapid division and supports their robust growth in a controlled setting. Since our experiment uses nutrient-deprived conditions in some wells, starting with high-glucose media for the baseline ensures we won’t unnecessarily stress the cells before testing our variable.’

You: ‘It’s very clear how we select the best media now. What are the best conditions to grow these cells?’

Dr Lee: ‘Great question let’s consider this.’

What would be the optimal conditions for growth of HeLa cells?

  • 37oC, 1% O2 levels, 5% CO2 levels.
  • 37oC, atmospheric O2 levels, atmospheric CO2 levels.
  • 37oC, atmospheric O2 levels, 5% CO2 levels.
