Option 1

Dr Smith: ‘Emma, I see you’re encountering some inconsistency in your liquid transfers. This sometimes happens if we release the plunger too quickly during aspiration or fail to press fully to the second stop during dispensing.’

‘Let’s try slowing down the motion of the plunger as we draw up the liquid to avoid air bubbles. Also ensure a firm and complete press to the second stop at the dispensing phase to expel all the liquid. These adjustments should help achieve a smooth and consistent transfer each time. Remember, mastering the subtle nuances of handling the plunger effectively takes a bit of practice, so don’t be discouraged. Let’s give it another go and I’ll be here to guide you further.’

Emma gives it another try and is excited to get the correct volume!

Dr Smith: ‘Well-done Emma! You got it.’

NOTE: Options 2 and 3 are also common errors during pipetting. Have a look after you complete the lab.

Now that you have been introduced to pipettes let’s discuss laboratory scales.
