Remission and maintenance therapy

Sylvia is concerned about using any medication, given her recent misadventure. She requests that you explain what side effects she should expect from this medication.

What would your response be?

Sylvia finally starts to feel much better. She has responded well to her medication and is feeling much more confident now. She even thinks that this has improved her performance at work.

Six months later, Sylvia feels very unwell and attends the Emergency Department. She reports about eight bloody bowel movements per day over the past few days. She is found to be febrile (39.3oC). Her heart rate is elevated (101bpm). Investigations show an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP). She also reports severe nausea. She is deemed to be having an acute exacerbation of her inflammatory bowel disease.
