Rachel: Do I really need insulin, doctor? I really, really hate needles. The thought of having to inject myself just doesn’t sit well with me. Isn’t there another way to manage my blood sugar without those shots?

Dr. Anastasiou: I understand, Rachel. Managing gestational diabetes can be tough, and we always want to consider how you're feeling about your treatment plan. Insulin, specifically rapid-acting insulin like lispro, is often the first choice for controlling blood sugar during pregnancy because it's very effective and does not cross the placenta, so it’s safe for your baby. But since you're reluctant to take injections, we can of course consider other options.

Rachel: Okay, I feel better knowing there are options. Maybe I’ll start with an oral drug and see how it goes. I’ll think about insulin if it becomes absolutely necessary.
