Dr. Alberts is puzzled as to why you would prescribe furosemide, a loop diuretic. Loop diuretics can be useful in the setting of hypertensive emergency, particularly in cases, where volume overload is a problem, for example in heart failure. Remember that through diuresis, furosemide reduces preload primarily. Effects on total peripheral resistance are secondary to its pharmacological actions.
