Hair

You: ‘That can’t be right. I can see hair with my naked eye as well.’

Prof. Jones: ‘Precisely. Although an EM can give interesting surface images of hair (he points to the figure of an ant below), it’s not our focus today.”

Viewed at about 23X, this scanning electron micrograph reveals a front-facing view of a female velvet ant’s (Dasymutilla sp.) head. It highlights the eyes on either side, the forward antennae connected by rounded “scapes,” the plentiful setae covering nearly every outer surface, and the jointed legs. These features place the insect within Phylum Arthropoda—“Arthro” referring to “jointed” and “poda” meaning “leg.” (Ref: Carr, Janice, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons)
