Meiosis

On your way to the biology lab, you ran into your lab partner Martha and you start discussing the lab ahead.

You: Hi Martha, I was thinking about the lab on cell division today because I accidentally cut my finger while cooking. I was a bit confused about the process that would help heal the wound. From what we mentioned in class I think that the process is called meiosis.

Martha: Let's think about this. Mitosis and meiosis are both mechanisms of cell division, but they serve distinct purposes. In your case, we're discussing the repair of a wound, correct?

You: Yes, that's right. The skin on my finger needs to heal.

Martha: I’m pretty sure that this is mitosis then because you need to replace damaged cells with new ones that are identical to the ones you lost.

You: That sounds correct but I will still double check with Prof. Collins.
