"New healthy red cells with normal haemoglobin are needed to replace the weak ones circulating in the blood of the patients with thalassaemia major.  The act of giving blood or red cells is known as blood transfusion. This is needed to correct the severe anaemia and prevent or decrease the ‘over-activity’ of the bone marrow. But how often?"
