Inhibits purine synthesis

Your supervisor commends you on your pharmacological knowledge. Azathioprine is a pro-drug, which gets converted to 6-mercapto-purine (6-MP). 6-MP inhibits purine synthesis and thus DNA synthesis. This will have a cytotoxic effect on rapidly dividing immune cells.
