Patient changes his medication following the suggestion of someone online

Patient visits you in the office and you ask about his medication. He says that he stopped taking his pain medication and swiched to some herbal products following someone's advice. He is in a FB group on osteoarthritis and they share all kinds of treatments and alternative ways of managing pain. He found that herbal supplement interesting and people were saying they are very effective. So, he decided to stop the pain meds, which were effecting his liver, and use this herbs instead. 

You discuss with your patient your disagreement based on the lack of scientific evidence on the herbal supplements' effectiveness and the possible risks of not managing the pain of OA. In addition to that, you make sure you explain to your patient that you are not absolutely certain that even your are talking about herbs they don's have an impact on his liver function, which has been recently compromised. 

You can see clearly that your patient's health literacy level is not very high, therefore he is more succeptible to all types of information that are semi-scientific and not medically supported.
