Temporarily stop taking metformin

Dr McPhee explains to Mr. Green that he will need to withhold metformin 24 hours before and 48 hours after the investigation due to the potential toxic effects of the contrast dye on the kidneys. Dr. McPhee goes on to explain that metformin can accumulate if there is kidney damage, which will increase the risk for the serious adverse effect of lactic acidosis. Dr. McPhee explains that it is reasonable to continue metformin after the procedure once creatinine/eGFR are confirmed unchanged and Mr. Green is stable.
