Labetalol (third generation beta-blocker)

Dr. Alberts agrees that labetalol, a third generation beta-blocker may be used in hypertensive urgency. Through blockade of the alpha1-adrenergic receptors, labetalol reduces total peripheral resistance. However, it also blocks beta receptors, which reduces contractility, heart rate and cardiac output.

Please go back and re-consider.
