Epilogue: Identification and Intervention

Dr. Spencer: Where do we currently stand in identifying the pathogen?

Sam: We've gone through the morphological observations and the Gram staining procedures. The colonies are rod-shaped and Gram-negative, which strongly suggests E. coli.

You: Exactly, Sam. The selective and differential media supported this conclusion too. Using EMB Agar, we observed the characteristic metallic green sheen, a hallmark of E. coli.

Dr. Spencer: Excellent work. It's crucial to decontaminate the affected areas and determine the right treatment for the patients who've been exposed. The areas we identified with high bacterial loads, especially the meat storage area, need thorough decontamination. We'll recommend disinfectants known to be effective against E. coli, like 5% sodium hypochlorite.

Sam: And for patient treatment, we have to consider the antibiotic susceptibility results.

You: We've already determined that it shows sensitivity to the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and tetracycline, based on our antibiogram results.

Dr. Spencer: Precisely. Informing the medical team about these antimicrobials will help tailor effective treatment plans for the patients. A job well done, both of you; you've made a significant impact.
